Why race with splits

A target time only tells you where you want to finish. Splits tell you where you should be at every checkpoint, which is the difference between running the race you planned and running the race the field dictates.

Even, positive or negative

Even splitting is the most economical way to race and the default here. A positive split starts slightly faster and is common in short track races where the start matters. A negative split finishes faster and suits road racing and athletes who warm up slowly.

FAQ

How do I calculate 1500 m splits?
Divide the target time into 400 m sections plus the opening 300 m. For 4:00, even splits are roughly 48 for the first 300 m and 64 seconds per lap.
What is a negative split?
Running the second half of a race faster than the first. It usually costs less in the final kilometres and protects against going out too hard.
How much drift is realistic?
A spread of 2-5% between the first and last segment is normal. Anything larger usually means the pace was misjudged.
