How to pace an 800 m

The 800 is almost always run with a slightly faster first lap. A common model is a first 400 around one to two seconds faster than the second, with the 600 m mark as the decisive checkpoint.

What the splits tell you

If your second lap is more than three seconds slower than the first, the opening was too aggressive for your current strength. If it is faster, you had more to give and left time on the track.
